【Vol.43 MG 1/100 Justice Gundam】 Review

This is a hands-on review of the MG 1/100 Justice Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. The standout feature is the deployable large lifter “Fatum-00,” and the silhouette of the suit with it mounted is more impressive than expected. Build difficulty sits at a standard MG level of about three stars out of five, with roughly five hours of assembly. The main body flows much like the MG Freedom, while the Fatum-00 movable frame is intricate enough that you need to keep checking the manual against the real parts. Below I cover color separation, posing, and the self-standing caveats worth knowing before you buy.

1. Introduction ― About the Justice Gundam

The Justice Gundam appears in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED as the machine piloted by Athrun Zala. Its defining trait is the large lifter “Fatum-00” carried on its back. I picked up this kit precisely because that Fatum-00 deployment gimmick had been on my mind for a while.

I had previously built the MG Freedom from the same SEED line and was impressed by how well it came together, so my expectations for Justice — its counterpart — were naturally high. Let’s see whether the kit lives up to that.

3. Packaging and Kit Contents

The box art shows Justice in flight with Fatum-00 spread out to either side, and it genuinely made me stop in my tracks at the store. The pinkish red and white color scheme stands out even among MG packages.

The side panels diagram the Fatum-00 deployment sequence as well as the sliding mechanisms in the shoulders and legs. Even before opening the box, you can tell this is an elaborate kit. The unpainted built sample on the back shows that color separation is reproduced with solid accuracy straight from the runners, which pushed my anticipation higher still.

4. Assembly ― Difficulty 3/5 / About 5 Hours

Build difficulty is a standard MG challenge, around three stars out of five, and roughly five hours is a good estimate. Here are the points that stood out while building.

  • The Fatum-00 movable frame is where I slowed down the most. The internal structure is intricate, and I had to compare the manual diagrams against the actual part orientation again and again.
  • At one point I assembled a section incorrectly and tried to take it apart, but the tabs bit together and were a real struggle to release. Around Fatum-00, I’d recommend confirming each step is correct before moving on.
  • The main body, by contrast, flows much like the MG Freedom and went together fairly smoothly. If you’ve built Freedom, the body should feel familiar.

Treating Fatum-00 as the focus stretch and the body as the steady-flow stretch makes pacing the whole build much easier.

5. Out-of-Box Review ― Looks, Articulation, Color, Gimmicks

The first thing I felt once it was finished was that the silhouette with Fatum-00 on its back looks even cooler than I’d imagined. Standing it next to the MG Freedom, the rear volume is in a completely different league, and Justice’s distinctive presence really comes through. That said, the weight of the lifter tends to pull it backward, so you’ll want a stand to keep it standing.

For articulation, the shoulder pull-out lets the arms reach forward naturally. Trying the two-handed Lacerta beam saber stance, the shoulder and waist swing let me add a twist for a clean dynamic pose true to the show. The sliding leg frame gimmick also offers a wide range, allowing a deep-kneed, low-center stance.

Color separation is accurate even out of the box, so just cutting and assembling yields a result that already looks good. On gimmicks, the Fatum-00 deployment I most wanted to try was the most satisfying — the wings spreading left and right carry the sense of accomplishment from the build. The boarding gimmick, sliding the cockpit to seat the body, works smoothly, and the “Super Lacerta” beam boomerang attaches securely.

6. Place in the Series ― Compared with the MG Freedom

The MG Freedom is Justice’s natural counterpart in the SEED MG line. The main-body build flows similarly between the two, so Freedom builders can apply their feel directly. The decisive difference is the back: Fatum-00’s volume and deployment gimmick, absent on Freedom, are Justice’s identity.

The build takes a bit more effort than Freedom, but in exchange you get more to play with. If you want to enjoy straightforward color separation and articulation, Freedom fits; if you want the deployment gimmick and rear volume, Justice is the pick.

7. One Tip for a Cleaner Finish

These are general recommendations. The kit looks great out of the box, so a few light steps go a long way.

  • Gate cleanup: After cutting, smoothing the gate marks with a hobby knife or a backed file sharpens the edges.
  • Panel lining: Lining the molded detail tightens up the look of Fatum-00 and the leg frame.
  • Top coat: A finishing top coat such as flat unifies the surface texture and pulls the whole model together.

All standard procedures, so start with the most visible surfaces and work up gradually.

8. What to Check Before Buying

  • Self-standing: The weight of Fatum-00 pulls it backward, so standing without a base is nearly impossible. For a grounded display, having a separate action base ready helps.
  • Part handling: Small parts can pop off each time you change poses, and the ankle area in particular needs care.
  • Lifter-body interference: When swinging the arms wide, Fatum-00 and the body arms tend to interfere, requiring lifter repositioning each time.
  • Display direction: Floating it in flight mode shows off the lifter spread nicely. Deciding your display style first makes it easier to judge the base you’ll need.

9. Good & More

【Good】

  • The Fatum-00 deployment and boarding gimmicks are fun to operate, delivering volume the MG Freedom doesn’t have
  • The waist, shoulder, and leg articulation work together well, making SEED-style poses easy to nail
  • Color separation is accurate even out of the box, so cutting and building alone looks great
  • Body parting is well designed with almost no visible seams (some weapons use under-gates that keep gate marks hidden)

【More (points of concern)】

  • The Fatum-00 weight tips it backward, making unassisted standing nearly impossible
  • Small parts pop off with pose changes; the ankles need attention
  • Lifter and body arms interfere easily, requiring repositioning for wide arm motion

10. Score

Overall: ★★★★☆

In a word: “An MG worth getting for the Fatum-00 experience alone.”

11. Conclusion

That wraps up the MG 1/100 Justice Gundam review. What I felt most strongly after building it is that the kit is worth choosing for the Fatum-00 deployment experience alone. The body flows smoothly much like the MG Freedom, while the Fatum-00 movable frame is intricate enough to demand close comparison between the manual and the real parts. The silhouette with the lifter on its back is cooler than expected, and I especially like displaying it in flight mode on a stand. The self-standing difficulty and lifter interference are worth knowing in advance, but for fans of Gundam SEED and anyone choosing kits for their gimmicks, this is a particularly rewarding build.
