This is a hands-on review of the Figure-rise Standard Puru Two (プルツー). Appearing from the latter half of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Puru Two is the Newtype clone girl who left a powerful impression, and here she has been rendered in plastic with the latest injection technology. This time I went with an unpainted straight build, and assembly took about 1.5 to 2 hours. It was also my very first attempt at a bishoujo plastic model (“bi-pura”). Below I share, with photos, the specific charms and cautions unique to bi-pura kits — from the face reproduction created by the high-resolution eye prints and sharp hair sculpting, to the fun of swapping between multiple expression parts, and the build difficulty caused by the tiny parts concentrated in the limbs and joints — all of which differ from ordinary Gunpla.

1. Introduction ― About the Puru Two Character

Puru Two is a Newtype clone girl of the Neo Zeon forces who appears from the latter half of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Like Puru before her, she is an enhanced human created by Axis, and she radiates a strong presence in the closing stages of the story. This kit renders that Puru Two as part of the Figure-rise Standard series. Using the latest injection technology, it pursues the very Puru-Two-ness of her on-screen image. It’s a genre — “bi-pura” — that handles quite differently from robot-type Gunpla, but for that reason the satisfaction upon completion is something special.

Figure-rise Standard is a series for enjoying character figures you assemble yourself. Even without painting, the pre-printed eye parts and color-separated molded plastic deliver a highly finished result. On Puru Two the work around the face is especially thorough, and because multiple expression parts are included, there’s the fun of choosing your preferred expression when you display her.

3. Packaging

Open the box and you’ll notice a runner layout with a different atmosphere from Gunpla. The skin tone, hair color, and each costume color are finely separated in molded colors, with small parts neatly arranged. The face parts in particular are delicate, and you can already appreciate the beauty of the eye prints right from the runner stage.

4. Assembly ― Straight Build About 1.5–2 Hours / Cautions Unique to Bi-pura

This time I did an unpainted straight build, and assembly took about 1.5 to 2 hours. The difficulty of the assembly itself is a bit higher than a typical Gunpla. The reason is that very small parts are concentrated in the limbs and joints. At first you may be a little thrown by the bi-pura part sizes. Here are the points that are easy to trip over.

• Watch out for misassembling tiny parts: The small components in the joints and limbs are easy to mix up left/right or in orientation, so proceed while checking the manual each time. The smaller the part, the more it pays to confirm its position before pushing it into place.
• Handle gate cleanup carefully: Because the parts are small, gate cleanup (the connection marks to the runner) directly affects the finish. Cut twice with your nippers and gently tidy up at the end with a design knife to avoid stress whitening or over-shaving.
• Handling the face parts: The pre-printed eye face is the star of this kit. I recommend handling it carefully all the way to the final step so you don’t scuff or damage it during assembly.
• Choose the expression parts at the end: Multiple expression parts are included, so which one you display can be decided by swapping after completion. There’s no need to fix it during the build stage.

There are many small parts and the difficulty is a bit high, but in exchange the finished appearance is outstanding. Every single part ties directly into the beauty of the face and proportions, so it’s a kit that rewards you the more carefully you build it.

5. Out-of-Box Review ― Overwhelming High Detail Around the Face

Once finished, the first thing that grabs your eyes is the reproduction quality around the face. The resolution of the eye prints is extremely high, the detailing of the irises is delicate, and you can recreate the on-screen image of Puru Two right in your own hands. The hair is sharply sculpted too, with the keenness and flow of the tips solidly expressed in three dimensions. Even unpainted in a straight-build state, the face area alone gives you a completion level that makes you feel “I’m glad I built this.”

Articulation is good as well, and the ease of nailing supple posing is part of the appeal of bi-pura. Because the joints move well, you can readily strike not only standing poses but also natural poses with expressive hands and body twists, widening your display options.

And the biggest play feature is swapping between the multiple expression parts. You can choose the expression to match the scene or mood you’re displaying, so even the same kit can change its impression dramatically. The very time spent finding your favorite expression is enjoyable, and it stirs an attachment quite different from mecha Gunpla.

6. Place in the Series ― As a First Bi-pura

• Difference from Gunpla (mecha type): Whereas robot-type Gunpla is about enjoying “armor color separation and articulation,” bi-pura makes “the beauty of the face sculpt and expression” the star. Even within the same Bandai plastic models, the assembly points and post-build enjoyment differ greatly. For anyone who has only built mecha kits, it should be a run of fresh discoveries.
• Relationship to Puru in the same series: Displaying her beside the earlier-released Puru lets you recreate, at your own hands, the two girls who appeared in the ZZ story. Both being enhanced humans of the same Axis, the satisfaction of lining them up is something special.
• Hurdle of a first attempt: The abundance of tiny parts makes the difficulty a bit high, but since you can reach this level of completion with no painting required, it’s fully recommendable as a first build for someone who wants to “step out from mecha and take on a new genre.”

7. One Tip for a Cleaner Finish

The completion level is high even as a straight build, but one extra step can lift the texture (these are general recommendations).

• Flat top coat: Just a quick pass of a flat top coat at the end suppresses the sheen of the molded colors on skin and costume, giving a moist, settled texture. It’s the most cost-effective single step for gaining an even more realistic figure feel.
• Retouching gate marks: Lightly touching up noticeable gate marks with a marker or paint close to the molded color makes stress whitening no longer bother you.
• Partial painting: Adding some shading to parts of the hair or costume increases the sense of dimensionality further. Once you’re used to it, it’s worth a try.

8. What to Check Before Buying

• Because the parts are small and numerous, a bright, roomy workspace along with nippers and tweezers suited to fine work will put you at ease.
• Small parts are easy to lose, so working over a tray or similar is recommended.
• If you go in thinking you can “knock it together quickly” with a mecha-Gunpla mindset, you may be thrown by the gap in difficulty. Regard it as a kit to enjoy carefully and take time over, and your satisfaction will rise.
• Swapping the expression parts is one of the pleasures, so picturing where you’ll display her and which expression you want to show will make you more attached to her after completion.
